## Actuarial and Financial mathematics

Mathematics has traditionally served as an entry to actuarial careers, and this track preserves that tradition. But mathematics has in recent years played a growing role in the insurance industry and other areas of banking and finance. This option combines a strong background in math with courses in finance, statistics and economics.

In this option, you can earn a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree. The Bachelor of Science degree places more emphasis on the natural and mathematical sciences.

**General Education Requirements:**The degree requires 8 hours of Natural Science (N), all 8 of these must be physics.

## Secondary Teaching

This track is in preparation for teaching mathematics in high school. The major requirements are identical to those of the mathematics option of the Secondary Education major. Students who complete the requirements for the SCED program with the mathematics option automatically complete all requirements for a second degree in mathematics. Similarly, if you choose the mathematics teacher certification track as your first major, a second major in SCED may be available to you. You should consult with an advisor in SCED.

## General Track

Of the four mathematics tracks, this track offers the widest possible mathematical breadth. It is appropriate for virtually all mathematics majors, and it is the recommended track for students intending to pursue an advanced degree.

In the general track, you can earn either a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree or a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree. The Bachelor of Science places more emphasis on the natural and mathematical sciences, while the Bachelor of Arts places more emphasis on arts and humanities. The requirements for each degree are a little different.

**General Education Requirements:**Both degrees require 8 hours of Natural Science (N). The B.S. degree requires all 8 of these be physics, while the B.A. requires 4 hours of physics and 4 more hours from any course with an N designation.**College/Departmental Requirements**: Requirements are summarized in the table below.

**Major Requirements:**The general track for the B.A. degree offers somewhat more flexibility in choice of courses outside mathematics and places increased emphasis on communication skills. See degree sheets for specifics. You can also look at a list of upper-division math courses.

If you are interested in going to graduate school in math, it is strongly recommended that your undergraduate degree program include Advanced Calculus I (MATH 4143), Advanced Calculus II (MATH 4153), Modern Algebra I (MATH 4613), and Modern Algebra II (MATH 5013).
