Math 5913, Introduction to Research in Mathematics Education, taught by Professor Oehrtman: This course will provide an introduction to the field of research in mathematics education with a focus on issues of teaching and learning at the undergraduate level. Students will develop an appreciation of the problems tackled within the field, learn the basics of quantitative and qualitative methodologies employed in this pursuit, and gain familiarity with a broad base of foundational literature. Students will also collect and analyze clinical interview data to develop insights into the reasoning and learning of undergraduate mathematics students. Throughout the course, we will focus on the role of theory in mathematics education research and how it is scientifically developed.
